Sweet Colorado Singletrack!

By Heidi Faller

Editor's Note: Heido and her SO actually did this trip before she competed at Brian Head, but we've been saving it as inspiration for planning ahead for a late spring, early summer trip. The photos from top to bottom are: Chutes, Joe's Ridge, and Fruita.

With the 4Runner packed to the max, my husband and I headed to Colorado for a week of riding. Our first stop was Fruita, Colorado. Fruita is a very small city in western Colorado, a 12 hour drive from our home in San Diego. We ended up being extremely tickled with the abundance of riding.

The first day we spent playing around on trails called Joe's Ridge, Chutes and Ladders, Prime Cut, and Zippity Do Da. The temperatures were in the mid 90's but we didn't care because everywhere we looked we saw singletrack. My favorite was Joe's Ridge. The singletrack climbed up and led you along the top of a ridge before you dropped down into a meadow where you could wind back and forth along a small canyon.

The next day we headed out to Mary's Loop, Horsethief Bench, Steve's Loop, and Troy Built Ð all part of the Kokipelli Trail system that stretches from Utah into Colorado. Horsethief was my favorite trail that day. The singletrack wound along a cliff above the Colorado River.

Unlike the day before, this trail was more technical riding with drop-offs, and a few tricky rock sections. The trail then turned inland a little and wound through a meadow and along the backdrop of the cliff. There were so many trail options that day that we easily racked up 25 miles of sweet riding.

Before we knew it, it was time to head back for a well-deserved dinner and a deep sleep filled with dreams of the riding yet to come.

More travelogue with pictures coming soon. Can you say "Road Trip"?! Colorado is definitely singing a siren's song to me. It's the home of cool people like Missy Giove, John Tomac, Pat O'Grady and many, many more which just goes to prove it's a little piece of heaven on earth for people like us who like to ride two-wheeled thingies.
